This is a nice clean episode with not much cut. The crew is looking for a new name for their block of new music.
The show starts off at 8pm and early on features super dope mash ups, including “Poppa Large” with the “Give the Drummer Some” instrumental, “Top Billin'” with “Real Love,” and “Pass da Mic” with “Hand on the Pump.”
During the airbreak at the end of side B, G discusses his trip to New York to visit Stretch & Bobbito’s show and Kool Keith’s upcoming solo album, which was going to be titled Straight Outta Bellevue Into Creedmoor.
Side C starts at about 9:35pm. G spends much of the show busting on Eazy’s clothes (“Yo, Eazy. Your clothes have expired. They need Super Action Tide” and “The collar on your shirt looks like a horse wore it”) and uses it as a set-up for promoting BBC (right around the corner from Club Zero!) in Philly. Things get really good starting with the second airbreak on side D and through side E with lots of great aggressive, upbeat tracks, cuts, and some good interview segments with a very full studio. Apparently a few weeks earlier the crew had gotten in trouble for a Thursday Night Live that went off the rails with profanity and then YZ comes on this episode, dropping the F bomb twice. A few words sneak through on “Uptown Anthem,” too, which I’m sure had G sweating a bit. Zulu/Zxulu and Jay-Ski also make an appearance promoting their new show, “The Q102 Hip-Hop Review” (aka the “New Zu Hip-Hop Review”). G also gives shouts to other hip-hop shows of the time including KDU’s (Cosmic Kev, AJ Shine), Bobbito & Stretch Armstrong, Sherrock Holmes (Pamona), and Teddy Ted & Special K (in North Jersey).
Suicide Posse brings up the test pressing of “Still the Mic Champion,” they’re still soliciting names for the demo section of their show, and YZ brings a tape of the unreleased “Return of the Holy One” single
Tony D rolls up at midnight as side F starts. A dope Thursday Night Live jumps off with heavy Power 99 disses directed at Colby Colb. G must have been sweating hard, as “shit” and “fuck” both sneak through, among other not-so-90s-radio-friendly words. YZ’s Nappy Assassinz and 720 Sound are representing. After Tone heads out of the building, he has a run-in with the police, so G has head out of the studio to help deal with it.
I was able to place this tape on July 16, 1992 because they mentioned it was the day that Ross Perot withdrew unexpectedly from the 1992 election. Eazy-M and use the first airbreak on side B to offer their own thoughts on the election.
Massive episode that runs well beyond midnight!
